Certified HUG Teacher: Requirements

Pre-Requisites and Course Components

Every birth, lactation and parenting professional brings unique perspectives, skills and passions to HUG Your Baby.

Requirements for certified hug teachers (CHT):

1) Appropriate Professional Background

Certification in (or student of):

  • Medicine (Nurse, Midwife, Physician, PT, OT, Speech Therapist)

  • Lactation (IBCLC, CLC, BPC, Lactation Educator)

  • Birth Support (Doula, Childbirth Educator)

  • Education (Early Childhood or Daycare Teacher, Nanny,Parent or Infant Massage Educator)

  • Other - Please contact HUG Your Baby if you have another professional background.

  • HUG parent video (18-minutes long)

  • Roadmap to Breastfeeding Success handout to view online or to download

  • 12 additional short videos explaining, and problem solving around, common bumps in the breastfeeding journey, birth to one year.

  • Age-specific Newsletters describing parent’s breastfeeding and parenting experiences, birth to one year.

  • HUGs Around the World Lullabies that use music to explore a baby’s development and breastfeeding support.

Purchase and complete Certified HUG Teacher Course - $85

Components of Certification course:

  • Review of key components of the 3 pre-requisite courses

  • Update on HUG Research

  • Documentation of HUG Parent Visits and use of the HUG Resources*

  • Documentation of a HUG Class (if you typically teach classes)*

    *If you do not routinely teach classes, you will document 4 Parent Visits. Those who teach classes will document 3 Parent Visits and one HUG Class.

  • Submission of a brief HUG Reflection on your training and/or experience to be posted on the HUG Your Baby blog.
