Worries, Wonders & Walking at Nine Months

Your baby has a number of surges in development at this age. She is likely to be more frustrated than usual as her mental social and physical development takes a big leap!

Stranger and Separation Anxiety

  • Baby suddenly realizes that "what goes away still exist" and she will miss her mom when mother is out of sight

  • Strangers seem scary now that baby knows YOU are her mother and that OTHER lady is not!

Learning to Walk

  • You have seen your baby bear weight on both legs, cruise around a table, practice bending her knees and pulling up again and again

  • Next your baby shifts weight from one leg to the other and lifts one hand off of the table

  • Standing with feet far apart and arms extended stabilizes your baby and propel her forward to those first few steps!

Pointing: Physical, Social & Cognitive Development in Action

  • Remember that baby's development progresses from head to toe, central trunk toward hands and feet, and fisting to opening of fingers.

  • Pointing is possible because of baby's fine motor development

  • Baby points which is a social act that says "join me in what I see!"

  • When father glances at something, the baby follows his gaze. Baby learns from parents what to explore in the world

Developmental Surges Cause Disorganization in Behavior

  • Remember that cognitive surges can cause disorganization in baby's sleeping, eating and general behavior.

  • Baby who had been sleeping through the night wakes up several times

  • Baby doesn't now need more calories at night.

  • Consider how to calm baby without more breastfeeding
